Whats the difference between shroud and Hexproof?

Asked by Derob90 11 years ago

I've looked on a few forums. But i'm getting confused about the target thing. If someone could give an actual game scenario.

Creatures with Hexproof can't be the target of spells or abilities an opponent controls. Creatures with Shroud can't be the targets of sells or abilities, including yours.

Shroud doesn't allow anyone to target the permanent, including you or your allies. Hexproof only prevents opponents from targeting the permanent.

Say you have Gladecover Scout on the field. As it is, your opponent can't target it with, say, a Doom Blade , but you could target it with a Giant Growth . If it had shroud, you would not be able to target it with the Giant Growth.

Ok so Shroud means that permanent or player cannot be the target of any spells abilities. Hexproof means that permanent or player cannot be the target of any spells or abilities that your opponent controls. Here is a game example.

I control an Argothian Enchantress and an Aven Fleetwing . I am being attacked by two 3/3s and one of those has flying. I block the flying one with my Aven Fleetwing and I block the other one with my Argothian Enchantress . I want to use a Giant Growth on each of them. I use it on my Aven Fleetwing successfully but I cannot use it on my Argothian Enchantress because it cannot be the target of any spells. My opponent uses Murder on my Aven Fleetwing but they cannot because it cannot be the target of spells my opponent controls.

Overall creatures with Hexproof can only be targeted by spells or abilities I control but creatures with Shroud cannot be targeted by anyones spells or abilities including mine.

Lets say someone wants to Searing Spear your Gladecover Scout . They can't, because your scout can't be the target of any spell YOUR OPPONENT controls. You, however, can target the scout with whatever you want, because you aren't an opponent. Now, if gladecover scout had shroud instead, then no one could target it with anything, not even you.

@cometear: In your scenarios, the players can't cast spells with illegal targets. The game will be rewound to just before the spell was cast.

@cometear, then your mana will untap and Giant Growth will return to your hand.

That's all epoc is saying.
