What happens when I gain control of my opponent's enchantment?

Asked by sleepycarrot 7 years ago

I'm making a deck with Daring Thief, which has lots of enchantments in it. I've looked all over the web at similar questions but they seem to all be about what happens to auras when a creature is exchanged. I'd like to know what happens to a regular enchantment, e.g. Conspiracy, if I gain control of it. Does it's ability now apply to me or still it's caster? And can I choose a different creature type? Also, if I gained control of a curse on me could I attach it to someone else?

Does it's ability now apply to me or still it's caster?

  • It will apply to you--you now control the enchantment, and are the "you" the card refers to.

And can I choose a different creature type?

  • You cannot--the card is merely changing ownership, it does not leave the battlefield and come back into play.

Also, if I gained control of a curse on me could I attach it to someone else?

  • You cannot. Ownership of an aura is distinct from the item it is attached to. A chance in the aura's ownership has no bearing on where the item is attached.

It's worth noting that some auras, including curses, will reference both "you" (the person who controls the aura) and the enchanted creature/player.

If you gain control of a Curse of Misfortunes attached to you, at the beginning of your upkeep you will have the option to search your library for a new curse to attach to yourself, but you likely won't want to.

If you gain control of a Curiosity, you will get to draw a card whenever the enchanted creature deals damage to one of your opponents, but not if it hits you.

If you gain control of a Firebreathing, you will be the one who get's to pay mana to give the enchanted creature +1/+0, if you so desire.

If you gain control of a Mind Control, you'll also get to take the enchanted creature, as long as there isn't a newer control changing effect (like that of Daring Thief) being applied to it.
