ways around mass exile/removal. Particularly Merciless Eviction

Asked by randomthing 11 years ago

I'm planing on making a green white enchantment deck that revolves on enchanting hexproofers and making them big. A huge weakness is mass removal that doesn't target such as Supreme Verdict , [Plainer Cleansing]], and Merciless Eviction . For decks that run these kinds of cards my sideboard consists of cards such as Mending Touch and [[Rootborn Defenses]. My question is what can I play to protect from Merciless Eviction ? I would like to know if Gods Willing is capable of this, by declaring protection from black/white can i protect at least one creature from it? Thanks for listening, any suggestions appreciated.

No, Gods Willing or other effects that grant protection will not stop Merciless Eviction . Protection stops the following four things:
D - Damage from relevant sources is prevented
E - Enchanting/Equipping by relevant sources is prevented
B - Blocking by relevant creatures is prevented
T - Targeting by relevant sources is prevented

Merciless Eviction does none of that, and will not be stopped by protection. I would either try to win before they get six mana, or go Bant for counterspells.

This is not a rules question and will quickly get deleted but..

Merciless Eviction is 6 mana, and you don't need to be able to stop it when it happens. Instead, you should try to win before your opponent can get to 6 mana, or be able to recover from losing your guy.

you can also run a third color such as blue for countermagic or red for reach.

Gods Willing will not help you, because protection only helps against damage, equiping/enchanting, blocking and targeting. Merciless Eviction does neither of those. The only ways I can think of are countering the Eviction (which requires addition of blue), or temporarily exiling your own creatures (e.g. with Legion's Initiative ), but that would make your enchantments fall off, and leave you just with a bunch of weak hexproofers.

Understood, win before it is played or quickly recover after being removed. By the way, how often is Merciless Eviction used to begin with? Is it really a threat to begin with? Or is it usually a sideboard card?

Its too expensive a boardwipe for mainboard in most decks. Unless Hexproof becomes a thing again, I doubt we will even see it in sideboards.

Sadly protection doesn't work that way, oh how many games I'd have won if it did, it reads: can't be targeted, dealt damage, or blocked by the chosen criteria. World effects, such as Merciless Eviction don't do any of the aforementioned so they can get around it. The only thing in standard that I can think of to help you circumvent Merciless Eviction is Legion's Initiative which could be bad for you for 2 reasons, 1) its red/white so you'd have to splash 2) it makes all your big enchantments fall off when you bounce your guys.

Well in standard, most UW or esper control decks rely on Supreme Verdict . I haven't seen any of them run Merciless Eviction in competitive play, although this might be different in your local meta.

Nothing you can do other than play around it. You're going to want to not fully commit every card you have when you expect a Merciless Eviction or Supreme Verdict is lurking around the corner. Start with one creature, beef it up, and force them to use the board wipe. Boon Satyr being flashed in at the end of their turn after a board wipe is particularly good, and he fits in your G/W enchantment theme. Added benefit, if you bestow Boon Satyr on a creature and they board wipe creatures, your Boon Satyr will remain in play and become a creature.
