Vision Charm rulings.

Asked by Femme_Fatale 11 years ago

The gatherer doesn't really tell me much about Vision Charm 's last choice.

So if I choose "Island" to swap to "Plains" on their upkeep, all Islands will be turned to Plains correct? But then what happens with the shocks? Does Breeding Pool turn into a Plains, or does it effectively turn into a Temple Garden ? Obviously it keeps it's name.

What about the check lands, scry lands, the lands with no sub-type, how are they effected by my swap from one type to another, or do I have to specifically choose, "no-type" to something else?

I may even be getting this wrong entirely, even if I swapped Islands to Plains would they still be able to tap for U on the basic lands? And what about if the shock lands and other non-basic lands, would they still retain their original ability? Would a Breeding Pool change to a mock Temple Garden or would it retain it's original tap for U or G? Would the abilities on fetchlands or lands with no subtype change at all?

I assume you're referring to the last mode printed on Vision Charm , because the Gatherer text lists the modes in a different order.

The land type mode of Vision Charm tells you to choose a land type (any land type) and a basic land type (Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, or Forest). All lands that have the first chosen land type become lands with only the chosen basic land type until end of turn. Those lands lose all other types and abilities because the effect doesn't say "in addition to."

The name of a land has nothing to do with its abilities or types. Even though Breeding Pool will still be named Breeding Pool, it won't keep the land types of a Breeding Pool card.

The check lands and scry lands have no land types. You can't choose "no type" because that isn't a land type. Under normal circumstances (i.e. assuming these lands haven't somehow been given land types by another effect), Vision Charm won't affect these lands.

Most of that makes sense to what I originally thought, now I'm just wondering if Breeding Pool would change to Plains or if it would change to Temple Garden if I chose Island to Plains.

All lands with type "island" will turn into basic plains overwriting all other types. meaning that all of the original duals with type island, all shocks with type island, and all islands are basic plains and the only ability they have is "tap: add W to your mana pool"

To be more explicit, Breeding Pool would turn from "Land - Forest Island" into "Land - Plains"; it would lose "T: Add G or U to your mana pool" and gain "T: Add W to your mana pool". As you stated, it would still be called Breeding Pool.

Vision Charm doesn't say something strange like "turn all land subtypes of that type into another land subtype," it "turn all lands with that subtype into into a basic land type," so all the land's subtypes will change. "Are you an island? Poof, now you're a plains!"

See the second paragraph of post #1. All lands with the first chosen type become lands of only the second chosen type until end of turn. They lose all other types and abilities.
