Vampiric Tutor (Visions) - multiple card search???
Asked by bhyKUBO 11 years ago
in Visions Expansion, it say's "Pay 2 life:" so does that mean if i searched for six card then i will lose 12 life???
It looks like an Activated ability though, similar to Nirkana Revenant Nantuko Shade Morphling AEtherling even Thassa, God of the Sea
or am i reading it wrong??

The way old cards were formatted was really misleading. The best way to know for sure what a card does is to look it up on Gatherer. On Gatherer, Vampiric Tutor 's oracle text reads "Search your library for a card, then shuffle your library and put that card on top of it. You lose 2 life." As you can see here, it's not an activated ability of any sort, nor is it an additional cost like Kicker (or Multikicker). You simply lose two life as part of the spell's resolution. Therefore, you can't search for multiple cards.

@Rhadamanthus so does that mean if ever i have the Vampiric Tutor (on Visions Expansion), the "Pay 2 life:" will still work?? or simply it won't work any way nor another just the same as Imperial Seal ??
@TitansFTW even the Oracle's on Vision set, writes- Pay 2 life: Search your library for any one card. Shuffle your library, then put that card on top of your library. http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?printed=true&multiverseid=3629
anyways.. Thank you for the answers! :D

bhyKUBO That's the printed text, not the oracle text. Above where the card text is displayed, it has a bar that looks like this:
You have to make sure that "Oracle" is selected to see the oracle text.

Cards always operate based on their Oracle text. Vampiric Tutor
's Oracle text reads:
"Search your library for a card, then shuffle your library and put that card on top of it. You lose 2 life."
You can't play Vampiric Tutor any other way, regardless of what the card says. The link you gave us takes us to the printed text of the card. Note that there's an option to set the text to Oracle or printed. Switch it to Oracle.

That's an old templating convention that was sometimes used for spells with additional costs. It isn't used anymore because it's confusing and gives the wrong idea about how some spells work. A card's current Oracle text can always be seen on its Gatherer page.
Note that for some reason, when Vampiric Tutor was reprinted in 6th Edition its text was rewritten to make this part of the effect rather than an additional cost. 6th Edition was a big step forward in fixing a lot of problems, but it still had some weird problems of its own.
