Unwinding clock, order of opeations?

Asked by Sudain 13 years ago

I have a Clockwork Hydra out, 2x Unwinding Clock s, 1 paladium-myr, and a contagin-clasp for good measure.

I attack and the hydra ends up tapped. During my opponents upkeep, can I do this combo?

1st Clock, Untap the Hydra, Myr, and Clasp. As an instant re-tap the hydra via his ability and tap the myr for it's ability. Resolve the second Clock, untapping the Hydra, untap the myr, and re-tapping it for it's mana ability. Then tapping the clasp for it's ability with the mana provided by the myr(since mana empties at the end of each phase?).

Am I thinking of this right?

Contagion Clasp

Palladium Myr

I realize if this works there is more fun to be had by inviting Steel Overseer over to the party. :)

Another thought is there a way to abuse this combo(assuming it works) to gain life. :)

This won't work. No player gains priority in the untap step, so you can't activate any spells or abilities. The first chance you have in any turn to cast spells and activate abilities is in the upkeep after "At the beginning of the upkeep" triggers go on the stack. Best you can do is get two more counters on the Hydra in each other player's turn.

502.3. No player receives priority during the untap step, so no spells can be cast or resolve and no abilities can be activated or resolve. Any ability that triggers during this step will be held until the next time a player would receive priority, which is usually during the upkeep step. (See rule 503, "Upkeep Step.")

This combo doesn't work for an even simpler reason: Unwinding Clock isn't a triggered ability, it's a continuous effect. It modifies the rules of your opponents' untap steps: Your artifacts untap too.

Like Siegfried said you don't get priority during your opponent's untap step either, but you'll still only get one untap regardless of how many Clocks you control. If the ability said "At the beginning of your opponent's untap (or upkeep) phase, untap all artifacts you control." then it would be a triggered ability; the lack of any "At this time" or "When this happens" wording disqualifies it.

Sorry to ruin the combo, but it won't work.

Then each Unwinding Clock would put the untap ability on the stack, and you would be able to activate Clockwork Hydra 's ability, activate Palladium Myr 's ability, untap them with the first Clock resolution, activate both abilities again, then activate Contagion Clasp 's ability and untap everything with the second Clock resolution.

It basically does the combo that Sudain wanted it to.

what he needs is 2 palladium myrs insted of 2 unwinding clocks or 2 or 4 artifact lands

How would that help?

well you tap them before their upkeep and you get the 4 mana needed for the clasp so you can use the clasp aswell as clockwork abilitys and then they untap during the other players upkeep

wasnt that the combo in the first place?
