Undead Warchief's -1 casting cost for zombie cards
Asked by relytreborn 11 years ago
So if i were to use Endless Ranks of the Dead combined with Undead Warchief would the negative casting cost work or no? same for such cards as Grave Titan or say Vile Rebirth what dictates a zombie card?
Firstly, Endless Ranks of the Dead just puts zombies straight onto the battlefield, not cast them, so mana cost doesn't matter. This applies to all creature tokens. Secondly, like nayaftw said, in Magic, usually if something decreases a value below 0, you treat it as if it's 0. Thirdly, "Zombie spells you play cost 1 less to play" only examines the creature subtypes of spells when you put them on the stack. Spells like Grave Titan , Vile Rebirth and Endless Ranks of the Dead don't have the Zombie subtype, so they'll be not considered as a Zombie spell, regardless of whether their abilities interacts with Zombies or not. Note that this cost reduction only affects colorless mana in the mana cost, so cards like Diregraf Ghoul won't receive a cost reduction at all for example.

That is also a good point about the stack, they're not cast, but the resolution of an ability.

They have a 'negative casting cost', as such, but they don't add mana to your mana pool. This is in the same way as if a lifelink creature with negative power deals damage, you won't lose life, because no damage was dealt. It's the same concept here.
