Transforming DFC's and bounce back?

Asked by soulshadow 12 years ago

So, lets say I play a Delver of Secrets and I transform it, then my opponent plays Simic Charm, what happens? I couldn't seem to find a real ruling if it's transforms back or if it becomes a dead card in my hand.

It reverts back to its original side. I'm not sure on the ruling but if it's not on the battlefield, it is always the original side.

Whenever a DFC is in any zone other than the battlefield, it has the characteristics of the front face. So when it is bounced to your hand, it becomes Delver of Secrets  Flip again, and you will need to attempt to transform it again once you bring it back into play.

711.2a In every zone other than the battlefield, and also on the battlefield with its front face up, a double-faced card has only the characteristics of the front face.

And, one more:

711.4. If a double-faced card is cast as a spell, its put on the stack with its front face up. A doublefaced card cant be cast face down

Thank you! That makes sense and that's how I thought it was but someone wanted to argue me on that and I couldn't seem to find a ruling anywhere.

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking, but I'll give this my best.

Assuming your opponent uses the Simic Charm's unsummon mode on your Insectile Aberration, it will return to your hand as a Delver of Secrets.

However, there is one thing that's unclear.

Now, it while as their front-side counterparts while not in play, I don't know if they enter new zones as-is, then "transform" as as a state-based action.

I don't think that rule ambiguity is relevant to you, but I hope someone with a bit more experience than myself can clear it up.

That should have read: "Now, while they count as..."

My apologies.

@aavb132: DFCs in non-battlefield zones don't transform as a state-based action (it's not listed under the SBA section of the CR), so I assume the enter as-is and then immediately transform, much like clone copies enter as-is and immediately lose their copied properties. For the purposes of triggered abilities, the game will see the face-up side as the card transitions between the two zones.
