Trading Post - sacrifice a creature

Asked by scwolf10 2 years ago

The third option of using Trading Post is sacrifice a creature, return target artifact from your graveyard. What if I don't have an artifact in my graveyard, can I still use this ability to sacrifice a creature?

You won't be able to activate the ability, as you need to declare a legal target first. You almost always need to declare legal targets for a spell or ability before putting it onto the stack.

I belive that is correct. Think of it like this. I can't use Royal Assassin if there's no tapped creatures. Even though Royal Assassin is tapped and could target its self, it can't even be activated beforehand because there is no legal target befor the cost is paid.

As a more broad scope answer for all things you put on the stack.
TLDR: Yesterday is correct, because in this case you cannot fulfill step 3
