Theros Gods and "Target Creature" spells

Asked by JWiley129 11 years ago

I am having a debate with unzensierte on the site about whether a God can be targeted with Selesnya Charm even if its devotion isn't met. For example, let us say that I am playing an opponent with Nylea, God of the Hunt and I have a Selesnya Charm in my hand. My opponent has Experiment One , Witchstalker , and Nylea on the field, making my opponent have 4 devotion to Green. The clause "If your devotion to green is less than 5, Nylea isn't a creature" will be active, therefore Nylea, God of the Hunt isn't a creature. unzensierte says that I can still target Nylea with Selesnya Charm , despite the fact that Nylea clearly states that she isn't a creature. I say that Nylea can't be targeted because of that clause and on the official Theros release notes: "If a God stops being a creature, it loses the type creature and all creature subtypes. It continues to be a legendary enchantment." Can the community please tell us who is right?

You're correct for the reasons you state. If a god is on the battlefield and it's devotion isn't met by its controlling player, it will only be an enchantment, and not a legal target for Selesnya Charm 's exiling mode. It'd be like trying to Doom Blade an Oblivion Ring .

Creatures only exist on the battlefield. The ability that makes Gods not be Creatures only functions on the battlefield.

In all other zones, the God is still a Creature Card.

But while it is on the battlefield and the devotion is not met, it loses the creature subtype per it's text.
