Tarmogoyf and card types

Asked by Wabbbit 12 years ago

What types does Tarmogoyf benefit from? How many types does Simian Spirit Guide have? Three? Creature, ape, spirit? Or just creature?

Tarmogoyf specifically tells you what it benefits from. The card types are artifact, creature, enchantment, instant, land, planeswalker, sorcery, and tribal. Subtypes like Ape and Spirit are not types.

Or if I have multiple sorcery's in my grave, does he get power and toughness from all of them?

205.2a The card types are artifact, creature, enchantment, instant, land, phenomenon, plane, planeswalker, scheme, sorcery, tribal, and vanguard.

Ape and Spirit are subtypes. The only relevant card types for Tarmogoyf are listed on his original printing:

Tarmogoyf counts card types, not cards of a type. You get one benefit if there is an instant in the graveyard. You don't get additional benefits if you have multiple instants in a graveyard.

Just creature. Goyf is referring to types like creature, instant, sorcery, etc.

The old Tarmogoyf had the very helpful reminder text on it:

"Artifact, creature, enchantment, instant, land, planeswalker, sorcery, and tribal are card types."

So, Simian Spirit Guide would only be a creature, and only give +1/+1.

Something like Dryad Arbor would give +2/+2 though, because it is both a Land and a creature.

Huh, how is he so dang powerful then? You can't find a legacy deck without him in it!

Because legacy and modern decks are dumping everything into their yards. Fetches, sacrificed and killed creatures, burn and ramp instants/sorceries, etc. They'll all be in the yard in the first few turns. It won't make sense until you know how the formats work.

In Legacy: crack a fetch land and counter an opponent's creature on turn 1. Tarmogoyf is a 3/4 on turn 2. Seems good.

And at 1G, he's a 3/4 on turn two that pretty much any Legacy deck can play.

You can easily splash Green for him (and a multitude of other amazing Green cards, like Krosan Grip or Seedtime ).
