Tapping mana for no reason?

Asked by Wood1892 11 years ago

Can someone tap a land for no reason? Like, tapping a land just to have the mana floating?

Yes. You are allowed to activate an activated ability any time you have priority (assuming there are no other restrictions on that ability). You don't need to have a "reason" to do so.

There is no requirement to have something to spend the mana on. You can activate a land's ability and make mana even if you can't spend it. Floating mana is legal, though the mana pool empties at the end of each step/phase.

I have no idea, doesn't seem like there would be a rule against it. there used to be mana burn, but they did away with that. But I'm not a judge, so may be some rule for it

But I think its fun to do, I say tap a mana to make an invisible ninja tokens with death touch reach and first touch at Fnm's, and causally block with them later in the game

works well with Amulet of Vigor and any of the bounce lands that give two mana like Izzet Boilerworks .

have one Izzet Boilerworks on the battlefield untapped, tap it for its RU then play a second Izzet Boilerworks which bounces the first but comes into play untapped because of Amulet of Vigor then tap that one, and if you are lucky enough to have a card like Walking Atlas on the feild you can use his ability to once again play the first Izzet Boilerworks tap it and have 3R and 3 U floating mana all from 3 lands. sadly it will all go away at the end of the phase though.

Since mana-burn is of no concern, you can without any hindrance, this count towards creatures that generate mana also i.e Zhur-Taa Druid .

It used to be, it wasn't uncommon to see a player commit suicide by killing himself with mana burn rather than "scoop". You'd just tap for all of your mana and end the turn without spending any of it.

I had this issue the other night playing with a friend. I played triskadekaphobia I know I probably spelled that wrong. Anyways I play it he taps a mana to take the mana burn to knock himself down to 12, I know mana burn is a thing of the past but it is a rule we like so it is kind of a house rule. I can understand using a land ability but if it is a basic land are you able to tap it for no reason?
