Sundial of the Infinite clarification please.

Asked by Samuel_The_Seer 11 years ago

I have experienced so much confusion with Sundal of the Infinite since it came out and I just would like a few bits of clarification with what it can be used with.

Now, I know it can be used to end my turn quicker so my combo-playing friend can't say, "At the end of your turn I double the number of +1/+1 Counters on Vorel of the Hull Conclave",

I know it can be used to go infinite with Isochron Scepter and Final Fortune (?)

Now can it be used to abuse "At the end of your turn" or "at the beginning of your end step" effects?

I would just really like some clarification please.

Please link all cards in your question.
Sundial of the Infinite
Vorel of the Hull Clade

Well, your example with Vorel of the Hull Clade doesn't quite work. Sundial of the Infinite 's activated ability uses the stack. Players still get priority before the ability resolves. Therefore, your friend can activate Vorel of the Hull Clade 's ability in response to Sundial of the Infinite 's ability. However, you can also wait until your friend activates Vorel of the Hull Clade 's ability, then activate Sundial of the Infinite in response to exile Vorel of the Hull Clade 's ability.

You can indeed take infinite turns with Isochron Scepter and Final Fortune . To do this, you can either respond to the delayed triggered ability of Final Fortune (the ability that triggers at the beginning of the extra turn's end step) or you can end the turn earlier (since Sundial of the Infinite 's ability causes the game to skip straight to the cleanup step, thereby avoiding the DTA).

Effects that trigger "at the beginning of your end step" can be skipped or exiled in the manner explained above. Effects that last until the end of turn still wear off because those effects end at the cleanup step.

Can't go back and edit the post. Apparently, I missed a bracket.

This card just causes so much confusion, since 50% of people I know all say that Sundial of the Infinite can't be used to permanently keep control of a creature with Act of Treason

@Samuel_The_Seer: You can't use Sundial of the Infinite to keep control of a creature stolen with Act of Treason . The reminder text on Sundial of the Infinite specifically says "'this turn' and 'until end of turn' effects end." Act of Treason 's effect lasts until end of turn, so that effect will end.

This card allows you to keep cards in play that are usually sacrificed on your end step by skipping it entirely and ending your turn with sundial instead. It dosn't skip discard down to maximum hand size as it says.

So more or less, it abuses effects that relate to the End Step by skipping it, but it does cause the turn to end.

Correct. From the Gatherer rulings:

9/22/2011: Ending the turn this way means the following things happen in order:
1) All spells and abilities on the stack are exiled. This includes spells and abilities that can't be countered.
2) All attacking and blocking creatures are removed from combat.
3) State-based actions are checked. No player gets priority, and no triggered abilities are put onto the stack.
4) The current phase and/or step ends. The game skips straight to the cleanup step. The cleanup step happens in its entirety.

Okay, thank you.

Sundial of the Infinite can legally be used to end your turn to counter a spell an opponent is casting or abuse a spell that relates to the End Step by skipping it entirely.
