Starfield of Nyx Plus enchantment creature p/t?

Asked by CheeseBro 9 years ago

So in origins we are getting the new card Starfield of Nyx

How does the second ability interact with enchantment creatures? would a Courser of Kruphix remain a 2/4 or become a 3/3? Would Athreos, God of Passage remain a 5/4, or become a 3/3? I wish they made it non-aura, non-creature.

JUDGE!!!!

despite my lack of being a judge, i feel like they would become 3/3 because that is their base power and toughness, but it can be modified. Mirror Entity is a card that modifies the base power and toughness of all your creatures and in the past, it has always took priority over other modifiers. I guess that Enchantment creatures would be those stats unless otherwise said so.

Yup. It would modify their p/t to equal their CMC. You could then change it afterwards though (either through one shot effects, or lasting effects with a later timestamp)

Anyways, all questions aside, i think this is an amazing win con for the modern pillow fort deck. I really like it and how it functions

CheeseBro ezio27 is correct. The p/t modifying effect will be applied to a 2/4 creature with cmc 3 making it a 3/3. If you are familiar with the layer system, the game starts with the creatures base p/t before going through the layers.

The given answers were all correct, but I suppose the "technical" answer you seem to want is the one lordoftheshadows offers. The layer system will start with the base object and then apply relevant effects to it, meaning the true base characteristics are overridden or built upon, as the case may be.

To be specific about whether Athreos is a creature or not, he would be a 5/5 only if his devotion is met. If Starfield of Nyx is in play along with Athreos, God of Passage with three or more other non-aura enchantments, but your devotion to black and white is less than seven, by his own ability, he is NOT a creature even though Starfield is trying to make him become one.

-Logician That is not correct. To understand why you need to understand the layer system and time stamps. I believe there are no dependencies here.

All of the below scenarios assume that you control at least 5 enchantments.

There are 3 abilities that are effecting (affecting?) Athreos: p/t=cmc, not a creature and yes a creature. The latter two apply in layer 4 and the first ability applies in layer 7b. Since we have two abilities that apply in the same layer and there are no dependencies we need to use time stamps to see which order they are applied in. If Starfield entered first then its ability applies first and the same is true for Athreos.

-Starfield entered first and devotion is less than 7: Athreos is just an enchantment.

-Starfield entered first and devotion is greater than or equal to 7: Athreos is a 3/3 creature.

-Starfield entered second and devotion is less than 7: Athreos is a 3/3 creature.

-Starfield entered second and devotion is greater than or equal to 7: Athreos is a 3/3 creature.
