Spreading Seas Question
Asked by joga 13 years ago
If I cast Spreading Seas on a swamp, will that swamp still generate black mana? If I put it on Inkmoth Nexus, can i still activate nexus's ability? Also, is the effect 'in addition to its other types?'
but does it still produce black mana. or is it blue mana now?

Any land with the basic land type of Island can tap for blue mana.
If a land is an Island it has the basic land type Island and so has the activated ability of tap: add one blue mana to your mana pool.
Since Spreading Seas turns any land into an Island the land would only be an Island , having none of the printed abilities, unless for some strange reason you Spreading Seas an Island .

AegairEtapa is correct. Because it doesn't include the "in addition to" clause it turns it into an island and nothing else; and by definition, if a land has any of the basic land types (whether or not it's a basic land itself) it can tap for the corresponding mana. (See also, for instance, Murmuring Bosk - it's got the forest subtype, so it can tap for green mana, even though it's not a basic forest.)

I think it would still be a swamp also, it says it's an island but it never said it loses it's other abilities, for example with Xenograft you can make a Sun Titan into an ally but it's still a giant.
The purpoes of Spreading Seas is islandwalk so the purpose would make no difference.
I think the swamp still would be a swamp, but that's just me, i'm only one rebel.

It will not be a swamp. As MagnorCriol mentioned Spreading Seas does not include the "in addition to" part in its text whereas Xenograft does have that text. Therefore any land affected by Spreading seas becomes just an island nothing more. It produces blue mana and nothing else. It is often used to stop people from using their own lands for the right mana. I have used it often as a form of control. So it isn't actually just for islandwalk.

The enchanted land loses its existing land types and any abilities printed on it. It now has the land type Island and has the ability to tap to add U to its controller's mana pool. Spreading Seas doesn't change the enchanted land's name or whether it's legendary, basic, or snow.

I believe it becomes an island... only an island, so no swamp, no inky. It doesnt say "in addition", so guessing not.
