Semi complicated multi-player question
Asked by maxon 10 years ago
I was playing a game of EDH and some stuff happened. I"ll try and make it easy to follow.Player A casts an Oblivion Ring on player C's Vish Kal, Blood Arbiter Later, player A gives control of the Oblivion Ring to player B.Then, player B leaves the game after taking lethal damage. The question: Does Player A regain control of the Oblivion Ring after Player B leaves the game OR does Oblivion Ring go to Player A's graveyard and Player C regains control of Vish Kal, Blood Arbiter ?

Granted those examples pertain specifically to creatures but the essence is the same.

It was a 3 player EDH game, where Player A had Zedruu the Greathearted as their commander, so the Oblivion Ring was given permanently.

Then it is a "gain control" effect. The effect will end when the player leaves the game and Player A would regain control of the O Ring.

billpasdmf is right. The control effect ends and the Ring goes back to Player A.

Thank you. That was the conclusion we came to the other night, but there was a bit of drinking involved, so I wanted to make sure we did it right.

It would depend on how Player B has control of Oblivion Ring . The two prevalent scenarios laid out are:
For all "gain control" effects, the effect ends. So, if you've stolen your opponent's creature with Ray of Command or Persuasion , he or she will regain control of it.
For any other effect where you control an object someone else owns (such as using Bribery ), there's no "gain control" effect to end, so we have to have those objects also leave the game.
