Ruric Thar, the Unbowed trigger

Asked by Apoptosis 11 years ago

Just wanted to be clear on a how old Ruric Thar, the Unbowed 's damage ability interacts with the current mechanics in standard.

His 6 damage for casting non creature spells applies to flashback, since that is still casting a card, just from the graveyard.

His damage trigger still occurs with miracle noncreature spells because that is also an alternative casting cost.

His damage trigger does not occur with bloodrush, since that is an activated ability.

What did I miss?

ciphered abilitys also activate the six damage because you are recasting the ciphered card

anything that says "cast" or "copy" such as ciphersthings like Primal Surge do not because those are put on the battle field and not cast

cipher reads (then you may exile this spell card encoded on a creature you control. Whenever that creature deals combat damage to a player, its controler may CAST A COPY* of the ecoded card without paying its mana cost.) As seen here Call of the Nightwing

Nightstlkr casting Primal Surge will do 6 damage, but permanents put onto the battlefield from Primal Surge resolving would not.

I agree with lepandaking that ciphered cards would cause Ruric Thar, the Unbowed 's triggered ability to go off.

essentially if youre going to run him, you will be limiting yourself to maybe 15 non creature, non land spells total

Make sure you select an answer if the question has been sufficiently resolved.

Epochalyptik was just leaving it open in the event that someone wanted to discuss another mechanic, but I'll select one now.

Abilities like Isochron Scepter 's will also trigger Ruric's ability. Whenever a copy of an exiled card is put onto the stack, the copy is created in and cast from exile.

so what happens when you have Ruric Thar, the Unbowed out and you cast Whip of Erebos will the damage be dealt as it resolves giving him lifelink and then you take 6 and gain it right back or will you just take the 6

I'm not sure, but I think you take 6. The whip is cast and damage goes onto the stac, then the whip comes into play after damage has been dealt. Subsequently, you would no longer take damage.

you would cast Whip of Erebos . Ruric Thar, the Unbowed 's ability goes on the stack. you lose 6 life, the whip resolves (assuming nothing else happens) then ruric would attack if you played the whip on 1st main phase and the lifelink will recoup that life you lost earlier. even if there were some way to flash in the whip during combat, you lose life before combat damage would apply.

You probably should have just started a new thread instead of posting in a three-month-old one.

When you cast Whip of Erebos , Ruric Thar, the Unbowed 's ability will trigger. The ability will go onto the stack above the spell. Therefore, the ability will resolve first and deal 6 damage to you before Whip of Erebos resolves and Ruric Thar, the Unbowed gains lifelink.
