Ruling with convoke and buyback?
Asked by Bobby654 9 years ago
The card in question is Sprout Swarm If I already have 7 saprolings tokens with Fungal Sprouting and I decide to use Sprout Swarm can I use four of the tokens to pay for Sprout Swarm and it's buyback cost. or will I still need to pay the extra 3 colorless in order to return Sprout Swarm to my hand?

7/18/2014 When calculating a spell’s total cost, include any alternative costs, additional costs, or anything else that increases or reduces the cost to cast the spell. Convoke applies after the total cost is calculated.
This is a ruling from the Gatherer Website For Sprout Swarm. This means that, as you cast the spell, you declare whether or not you are going to use the buyback. Then you pay for the total cost of the spell which will then be 5 (1G + 3 for buyback)
7/18/2014 The rules for convoke have changed slightly since it last appeared in an expansion. Previously, convoke reduced the cost to cast a spell. Under current rules, you tap creatures at the same time you pay the spell’s costs. Tapping a creature this way is simply another way to pay.
Essentially, you are tapping your saproling tokens via convoke to pay for the spell as though you would tap lands for it.
This works how you think it would. By using the little Sprouts you already have to pay for Sprout Swarm.
Note: If you have cards like Parallel Lives or Doubling Season in play, and you get at least 5 saprolings out of your resolutions, you can get infinite saprolings with this card by tapping the sprouts (via convoke) you get from each resolution.

Yay raging squiggle answered it fully. Sorry for my 1 sentence answer I had to go take care of something and just posted what I had as I was looking for the relevant rules. The specific rules are 601.2f, 601.2h, and 702.50a

You can tap the saprolings to pay the buyback cost.
