Regeneration and clones.
Asked by TassleMagik 13 years ago
Ok, here is the scenario.
I have a legendary creature in play, lets say it's Uril, the Miststalker , and he has Gaea's Embrace enchanting him. My opponent casts Clone and copies Uril. Can I regerate Uril using the ability of the enchantment?
Same scenario, except Uril, the Miststalker has Hyena Umbra enchanting him. Opponent casts Clone . Does the totem armor come into effect?
Thanks :)

Correct. Regeneration replaces destruction, and the legend rule does not destroy Uril, it merely sends him and the other uril to the GY

Miasma's interpretation is correct. The Legend Rule doesn't use a "destroy" effect in the way it works, so Regeneration, Totem Armor, Indestructible, etc. don't interfere with it. The only way to avoid the Legend Rule is with Sakashima the Impostor (because the name isn't copied) and Mirror Gallery (because yeah).

Rules of Regeneration:
701.11a If the effect of a resolving spell or ability regenerates a permanent, it creates a replacement effect that protects the permanent the next time it would be destroyed this turn. In this case, Regenerate [permanent] means The next time [permanent] would be destroyed this turn, instead remove all damage marked on it and tap it. If its an attacking or blocking creature, remove it from combat.
701.11b If the effect of a static ability regenerates a permanent, it replaces destruction with an alternate effect each time that permanent would be destroyed. In this case, Regenerate [permanent] means Instead remove all damage marked on [permanent] and tap it. If its an attacking or blocking creature, remove it from combat.
701.11c Neither activating an ability that creates a regeneration shield nor casting a spell that creates a regeneration shield is the same as regenerating a permanent. Effects that say that a permanent cant be regenerated dont prevent such abilities from being activated or such spells from being cast; rather, they prevent regeneration shields from having any effect.
The Legend Rule:
420.5e If two or more legendary permanents with the same name are in play, all are put into their owners' graveyards. This is called the "legend rule." If only one of those permanents is legendary, this rule doesn't apply.
If i'm deciphering this correctly, regeneration doesn't let Uril, the Miststalker
stay on the battlefield. Regeneration is a replacement effect for when a permanent would be "destroyed". Since the SBA of the Legend rule simply places in the graveyard instead of "destroying" it, the Legend Rule cannot be replaced by Regeneration. The same would apply to Hyena Umbra
's "totem armor".
