Redirecting damage to planeswalkers
Asked by nsecord 13 years ago
So at fnm today I was told something that struck me as rather odd, this was that if i swung at my opponent with a creature with something like Sword of War and Peace equiped I could redirect the damage from its ability at his planeswalker (Garruk Relentless Flip Flip in this case). Can anyone confirm this as it seems a bit shaky to me.
Thank you,
Nich

306.7. If noncombat damage would be dealt to a player by a source controlled by an opponent, that opponent may have that source deal that damage to a planeswalker the first player controls instead. This is a redirection effect (see rule 614.9) and is subject to the normal rules for ordering replacement effects (see rule 616). The opponent chooses whether to redirect the damage as the redirection effect is applied.
This is the rules quote reinforcing what Rhadamanthus stated above.
Basically, whenever a source you control would deal damage to an opponent, you may choose to redirect all of that damage to a planeswalker that opponent controls instead. This is a replacement effect which replaces the opponent being dealt damage with the planeswalker being dealt damage.
Note that you may not redirect damage from a source you control to a planeswalker you control.

Yes. Slagstorm is modal, so you choose the mode that will deal damage to players. Then, you redirect the damage it would deal to a certain opponent to a certain planeswalker he or she controls.

Wow this is interesting. So if you swung with Invisible Stalker equipped with Sword of War and Peace , you can say 3 damage to the player and the Sword of War and Peace 's damage to the PW?

That's correct, for all the reasons discussed above (you're actually asking the original question).

I wish, I wish that Chandra, the Firebrand 's ultimate could be targeted at planeswalkers. I've been in situations there my friend (in EDH) got three diff. ones out and I had the choice of 6 damage to him or 6 damage to ONE of his PWs.

yeah that would be cool maybe rather too specific though?lol it seems they only printed alot of planeswalker specifically worded stuff in the Commander decks like the Vow of Duty and others

That's correct. Part of the rules for planeswalkers is that if non-combat damage would be dealt to your opponent, you can redirect it to one of his planeswalkers instead. The damage dealt by the triggered ability of Sword of War and Peace isn't combat damage, so it can be redirected to a planeswalker.
