Questions about Obzedat, Ghost Council.
Asked by TheGodofNight 11 years ago
If Obzedat, Ghost Council is on the field, and he has gained +1/+1 counters, if I exile him, does he lose those counters or does he keep them?
I understand that once I exile Obzedat, Ghost Council and bring him back, he permanently has haste. Does that haste still apply if he were to die, and I use Whip of Erebos or Obzedat's Aid to bring him back? (Mind you, I know that Whip of Erebos gives him haste, and to keep him, I would have to exile him and he would return with haste anyway, but bypassing all the extra instances of haste, would he retain haste through death? Or even if he was returned to my hand with a spell like Disperse ?
As always, thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.

This quote was taken from the Wizards of the Coast Gatherer website under the section labelled "rulings" regarding Obzedat, Ghost Council
"1/24/2013 When Obzedat is returned to the battlefield by its last ability, it gains haste indefinitely. This may be relevant if a player gains control of it later using a spell or ability that doesn't give it haste. "
Here's the link to the page in question:

So I am reading this wrong then?

Yeah. By "indefinitely" they mean for as long as he's on the battlefield. His ability refers to that specific instance of Obzedat. When he leaves the battlefield, that instance ceases to exist, and when he enters again it's a new instance.

"Indefinitely" means "without a pre-set duration". Other game events can cause an effect with an indefinite duration to end (a card changes zones, a player leaves the game, etc.).

No, counters only exist on a permanent when it's just that, a permanent. This means that if it leaves the battlefield, it loses all counters unless otherwise stated, such as with Skullbriar, the Walking Grave .
No. He doesn't actually permanently have haste, he gains it through his ability. Think of it as if he was enchanted with something that gave him haste, except you couldn't get rid of the enchantment through spells or abilities. If he were to leave the battlefield for any reason, he'd lose his haste.
