Question about Swerve

Asked by OneWinged 8 years ago

Good day, fellow players

I wanted to ask you something about Swerve. My opponent controls a Gelectrode equipped with Swiftfoot Boots. I control a Fluxcharger and have an Izzet Charm and Swerve in hand. I decide to cast the Izzet Charm to my Fluxcharger dealing 2 damage and in response to that I cast Swerve to change the target to the hexproofed Gelectrode. My question is: Is this legal or correct? Can Swerve really get past hexproof?

Thanks in advance.

No. You can only change the target to another legal target. Because you still control the Izzet Charm, you cannot change the target to Gelectrode because it has hexproof.

If on the other hand your opponent cast the Izzet Charm on Fluxcharger you could Swerve it to the Gelectrode because you are only targeting the spell and your opponent still controls the spell so it can legally target their creature with hexproof.

Since it is the only card I know that does this I will mention that if you Commandeer an opponent's spell you can not target their hexproof creatures with it since you are now the controller if the spell.
