Priority/Responding to an opponent drawing multiple cards during their draw step and taking damage from multiple sources on each card draw.

Asked by 711Keaven 11 years ago

Lets say that I have a Kederekt Parasite , Underworld Dreams , Spiteful Visions , Howling Mine , and Quest for Pure Flame on the battlefield. Quest for Pure Flame begins with zero quest counters.

I pass turn. Opponent goes through upkeep, untap step, and begins their draw step. They draw a card. They take three damage. Quest for Pure Flame gets three quest counters. They draw a second card. This is where my confusion starts.

Will all three damage be dealt to my opponent before any quest counters are put on Quest for Pure Flame ?

If not, can I sacrifice Quest for Pure Flame after my opponent takes one damage from the second card draw and before they take the other two damage?

If none of that applies, can I even sacrifice Quest for Pure Flame before my opponent draws their third card?

I'm looking for the answers to all these, not just the first that applies.

I would also be interested in the declarations necessary to do any of this.

Sorry about the long question, I couldn't think of a more concise way to summarize this without creating ambiguity.

Thanks in advance!

Bonus Question: Which card will my opponent draw first, the one from Howling Mine or Spiteful Visions ? Same with the damage from Kederekt Parasite , Underworld Dreams and Spiteful Visions .

Nothing interrupts the resolution of an object on the stack.

At the beginning of your opponent's draw step, both Howling Mine 's ability and Spiteful Visions 's ability trigger. Your opponent draws his or her card for the turn, then the three ping abilities trigger. You put the five abilities onto the stack in any order you choose. The smart thing to do would be to put the Howling Mine 's ability onto the stack first, then put the Spiteful Visions 's ability on top of it. Put the ping abilities above them in any order.

The ping abilities resolve. After each resolution, Quest for Pure Flame 's ability will trigger and resolve. Quest for Pure Flame ends up with three quest counters by the time you get to the Spiteful Visions 's draw ability.

You resolve the Spiteful Visions 's ability. Your opponent draws a card, and the three ping abilities trigger again. This time, you resolve the first one and Quest for Pure Flame 's ability triggers. You resolve it, and Quest for Pure Flame now has four quest counters on it. You may activate its second ability at this point, and it will go onto the stack above the other two ping abilities and the Howling Mine 's ability.

You resolve the Quest for Pure Flame 's activated ability. Then, you resolve the ping abilities, each of which deals double damage.

Then you get to the Howling Mine 's ability. Your opponent will draw two cards. The ping abilities will trigger for each draw, but they'll all be stacked at once after the Howling Mine 's ability resolves. Each of these six abilities will deal 2 damage to your opponent.

End result: Quest for Pure Flame is in your graveyard, your opponent has drawn four cards total, and your opponent has been dealt 20 damage.

I was under the impression that my opponent would draw their normal card for turn last since Howling Mine and Spiteful Visions trigger at the beginning of the draw step. Why is this not so?

Also, why is the player drawing four cards? I'm only getting one from Spiteful Visions , one from Howling Mine , and the normal one for turn.

Players perform their turn-mandated draw immediately. It's the first action of the draw step.

Also, I confused Howling Mine with Font of Mythos . That doesn't change the scenario much, though. The end result will be three cards and 14 damage. Also, Howling Mine 's draw ability and Spiteful Visions 's draw ability become interchangable in the ordering of abilities.

Thanks!

And just to clarify, I choose the order the abilities trigger, they go on the stack in that order, then resolve and actually have their effect in the opposite order as they come off the stack, right?

Not quite. They trigger at the specified times - in this case, some abilities trigger simultaneously with other abilities - but they are put onto the stack in the order you choose. The last ability put onto the stack will be the first to resolve.
