Possible Regenerate Use?

Asked by _Moonie_ 1 year ago

I'm still a little cloudy on some of the mechanics of Magic and regenerate is one of them I'm somewhat unfamiliar with. But I recall one of my first decks that I built when I was first introduced was Orzhov using the Exquisite Blood Sanguine Bond combo, but I also used High Priest of Penance and Skeletal Grimace

Is that used correctly? Would it work to activate his ability or would the regenerate block any damage from going through keeping it from being activated?

It would work. What every single instance of regenerate does:

Each time this permanent would be destroyed, instead remove all damage done to it and tap it.

So what happens is: you activate the ability from Skeletal Grimace, then your High Priest is dealt damage, triggering its ability to destroy a nonland permanent.

Any damage on the Priest would be lethal damage of course, but instead of dying, the regenerate ability will take effect, by removing the damage that was dealt (not preventing it, that's why the trigger keeps working) and tapping the Priest. Do note that you should pay the again before it takes damage again, every activation of regenerate will prevent one "death".
