Playing Living Death with Grave Pact on the field

Asked by meecht 12 years ago

Situation: I have Grave Pact and two Tormented Soul s on the field, while my opponent has four spirit tokens. I cast Living Death , which returns three Gravecrawler s under my control and two Doomed Traveler s for my opponent.

Would my opponent sac two spirit tokens due to my Grave Pact, or the two Doomed Travelers?

The Doomed Traveler s because the tokens are sacrificed due to Living Death

Living Death causes all players to sacrifice all creatures they control. The sacrifices are made simultaneously, and your Grave Pact 's ability triggers twice because you sacrificed two creatures. The abilities don't go onto the stack yet. Then, Living Death finishes resolving and each player returns the appropriate creatures to the battlefield. At this point, the triggered abilities of Grave Pact will be placed onto the stack. When they resolve, your opponent will sacrifice one creature for each. Since he or she has two Doomed Traveler s, he or she can choose to sacrifice one Doomed Traveler per ability or one Doomed Traveler and the Spirit token it makes (since the on-death triggered ability of Doomed Traveler will trigger when that Doomed Traveler is sacrificed to the first instance of Grave Pact 's ability, go onto the stack above the second instance, and resolve before the next sacrifice).

He would have to sacrifice the two doomed travelers, because your two creatures died, and that goes to the stack after living death finishes resolving.

@ Epochalyptik, is a spirit a legal target, even though it's not on the field yet?

Grave Pact 's ability doesn't target.

Note that Grave Pact doesn't trigger once as a cumulative ability counting the total number of creatures you control that died. It triggers once for each creature, and the abilities are handled separately. When the first Doomed Traveler is sacrificed during the resolution of the first instance of Grave Pact 's ability, its ability will trigger. This ability will go onto the stack above the second instance of Grave Pact 's ability, meaning that it will resolve first and give the opponent a Spirit token. By the time the second instance of Grave Pact 's ability resolves, your opponent will control both a Doomed Traveler and a Spirit token. Therefore, he or she will have the choice of sacrificing either one.
