Playing an Instant that has been discarded.
Asked by Coltino 8 years ago
For Example, Say I have Liliana of the Veil on the battlefield and I have a Lightning Bolt in hand. I use her +1 to have both players discard a card from hand. Theoretically, what would happen if I decided to discard my Lightning Bolt? Could I still play it at instant speed while the discard is still on the stack and not have to discard anything else? Or does the Bolt have to go to the graveyard without being able to be used?
Oh my apologies, Madness actually has a replacement effect when you discard it, so it never goes to the graveyard until the ability is done resolving. THEN it has a triggered ability.
702.34a Madness is a keyword that represents two abilities. The first is a static ability that functions while the card with madness is in a players hand. The second is a triggered ability that functions when the first ability is applied. Madness [cost] means If a player would discard this card, that player discards it, but exiles it instead of putting it into his or her graveyard and When this card is exiled this way, its owner may cast it by paying [cost] rather than paying its mana cost. If that player doesnt, he or she puts this card into his or her graveyard.

Link all cards in your question.
Liliana of the Veil
Lightning Bolt
There's a specific keyword that lets you do what you want, and that keyword is called Madness. Normally when a card is discarded, it goes to the graveyard (or any other zone if something makes it so cards don't go to the graveyard such as Leyline of the Void and Wheel of Sun and Moon). Madness triggers off of the card being discarded and has you exile it instead. You can then cast it for its Madness cost instead, allowing you to still play it. Fiery Temper would let you essentially do what you want in that scenario you proposed.
