play with top card revealed, if land put on battlefield impacted by mill cards every upkeep

Asked by paladinjake 8 years ago

if a player plays with the top card of his/her library revealed, if it's a land put it onto the battlefield, how does something like a 'manic scribe's' delirium ability (beginning of opponents upkeep they mill 3 cards) work if they draw a land?

Please link all cards relevant to your question: Manic Scribe (and I suspect something like Oracle of Mul Daya or Courser of Kruphix)

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking, so let me cover the whole set of what could happen here.

First, the upkeep step happens before the draw step, and the first main phase (and the first opportunity to play lands) after the draw step. So the order in which things happen is:

  • Upkeep: Manic Scribe triggers, and on resolution mills three cards
  • Draw Step: The active player draws a card
  • Main Phase: The active player may play a land from their hand and/or their library (in case of Oracle of Mul Daya)

Which card they draw in their draw step doesn't greatly influence things here - if at all, it might draw them a land that they may play from their hand.

the cards in question are the courser of kruphix and manic scribe. so they mill 3 cards, then go into the draw step and reveal the top card and may play the land during the main phase? could they not theoretically mill a card, play with the next one revealed, and if its a land play it during the upkeep when they are supposed to mill 3 cards?

thanks!

what if with courser of the kruphix i draw, and revael a land during the opponents turn, when can the land enter the battlefield, do i have to wait until my main phase?

You can normally play lands only as a sorcery - during your main phase, when there is nothing else on the stack. Having the ability to play those lands from another zone like your graveyard with Crucible of Worlds or the library with Courser of Kruphix does not change that.

Unless an effect from a card says otherwise, the only time you may play a land is on your own turn, during a main phase, when the stack is empty.

Neither Oracle of Mul Daya nor Courser of Kruphix affect when you may play a land.
