Phasing/exile and self-damage

Asked by legendofa 2 years ago

I tap a Psionic Sliver to activate its ability. Before that resolves, I target the Sliver with Slip Out the Back. Does the Sliver takes damage, and does the target of its ability take damage? How about if I use Cloudshift instead of Slip Out the Back?

Once abilities are on the stack they exist independently of their sources. The ability will resolve and deal damage to the targeted creature assuming that nothing has happened to prevent it in the case of both Slip Out the Back and Cloudshift on your Psionic Sliver. In both cases your Psionic Sliver won't take damage, though for different reasons. With Slip Out the Back it is phased out and treated as if it doesn't exist and therefore can not be damaged. With Cloudshift it is a different game object than the one that activated the ability and therefore will not be damaged. Last known information will be used in each case to determine the characteristics of the Psionic Sliver that dealt the damage.
