Oracle of Mul Daya with the Stack
Asked by Rambolicious_0 5 years ago
Since playing lands doesn't use the stack, can I use Oracle of Mul Daya 's ability before Farhaven Elf ETB resolves?
Note: I couldn't use the Oracle's ability before casting the Elves because the top of my library wasn't a land, but I got a card draw out of the cast. That did reveal a land.
Just to note, if the top card continues to be a land after the Farhaven Elf 's ability resolves, as I assume it is your main phase, you can simply play that land. Note that putting the land into play does not count towards your limit of 2 lands per turn with Oracle of Mul Daya .
Edit: After re-reading the premise, I assume that something like Beast Whisperer is also on the field, allowing you to draw a card upon casting the elf. As per above, unless the stack is empty, you cannot play lands.

Boza It actually is a Beast Whisperer. Nice guess.
Hypothetically, would there be any difference if the Elf's ability were an "as" replacement effect (and why are they called that)?
Ok, so is there any way I can make sure I get a land from both the Oracle and the Elf? I have the Oracle, Beast Whisperer, a Cloudstone Curio , plus some irrelevant stuff on the battlefield, and only 3 Mana open (just enough for the Elf). The top of my library is a nonland card, and second card is a land.
Sorry if this is too many questions.

If there were a hypothetical card similar to Farhaven Elf that had you search out a land "as [this] enters the battlefield" then you still wouldn't be able to make the play you're trying to achieve. In that example you would be applying the replacement effect as part of completing the resolution of the spell, and players don't have priority to take actions while a spell is resolving.
In your example, the only real way to get a land from Farhaven Elf and another land off the top through Oracle of Mul Daya is to get lucky after shuffling your library. You can't play a land while the Elf is on the stack and you can't play a land while its triggered ability is on the stack. The ability triggers and is put onto the stack immediately after it enters the battlefield, with no space in-between to take another action.

No, you won't be able to do that. Even though playing a land is a special action that doesn't use the stack, you can only do it when the stack is empty. You can't play a land in response to something else.
115.2a Playing a land is a special action. To play a land, a player puts that land onto the battlefield from the zone it was in (usually that player's hand). By default, a player can take this action only once during each of their turns. A player can take this action any time they have priority and the stack is empty during a main phase of their turn.
