On the stack: Wheel of Fate then Memory Jar
Asked by obitus 11 years ago
So say hypothetically, a player has Memory Jar on the field already. Then the player casts Wheel of Fate , afterwards the person cracks the Memory Jar on the stack.
My question is this; does Wheel of Fate get countered because it was exiled before resolving?
I don't think so, for some reason this scenario reminds of the Royal Assassin . If the Royal Assassin activates his ability, then in response dies his ability still resolves.
I tried checking 6.01 of the rule book:
601.2. To cast a spell is to take it from where it is (usually the hand), put it on the stack, and pay its costs, so that it will eventually resolve and have its effect.
See why I am confused?
So in the case where Wheel of Fate is suspended, it stays that way, whilst Memory Jar 's ability resolves. Then each player exiles their hand, and draws 7 cards. At the beginning of the next end step each player discards whatever cards they have left in hand, and returns the exiled cards to their hand. When the last time counter (presumably up to four turns later) is removed from Wheel of Fate , each player will then discard their hand and draw seven cards.

Aww, I see my error.
So the player suspends Wheel of Fate , there by removing it from the hand and onto the stack. Then Memory Jar is put on the stack and resolves before Wheel of Fate , but either way it does not deal with Wheel of Fate .
This would be true for any card you can cast?

I guess my next question really is asking does the fact that you suspend a card matter from casting a card, then someone would crack Memory Jar . Does your answer still apply, Dallie?

Oh, I think you just helped me solve it.
702.61a Suspend is a keyword that represents three abilities. The first is a static ability that functions while the card with suspend is in a players hand. The second and third are triggered abilities that function in the exile zone. Suspend N[cost] means If you could begin to cast this card by putting it onto the stack from your hand, you may pay [cost] and exile it with N time counters on it. This action doesnt use the stack, and At the beginning of your upkeep, if this card is suspended, remove a time counter from it, and When the last time counter is removed from this card, if its exiled, play it without paying its mana cost if able. If you cant, it remains exiled. If you cast a creature spell this way, it gains haste until you lose control of the spell or the permanent it becomes.
So suspending the card does not use the stack, therefore Memory Jar does not effect Wheel of Fate . My question still stands for what if someone were to cast any spell (a creature for example) and then someone cracked Memory Jar .

I'm not entirely sure I understand what you're asking so I'll answer all possible scenarios.
In the case of a player suspending Wheel of Fate then activating Memory Jar
Wheel of Fate isn't put onto the stack when you cast it. It's exiled, with 4 time counters on it. When the last time counter is removed, you cast the spell, which moves it from exile onto the stack.
In case of a player removing the last time counter from a suspended Wheel of Fate , then activating Memory Jar in response
Memory Jar goes on the stack on top of Wheel of Fate and resolves first, and you exile your hand then draw 7 cards. Then Wheel of Fate resolves, making you discard all the cards you had in your hand, and then drawing another 7. Then at the beginning of the next end step, Memory Jar 's delayed trigger goes on the stack and you discard your current hand, then return the exiled cards to your hand.

suspended cards are put in exile and not in the hand. Once it's suspended Memory Jar doesn't interact with it in anyway, not even the way you're suggesting.

Sorry for the confusion, I see now how Wheel of Fate can work with Memory Jar .
My confusion comes from when a player casts a spell, technically the card goes from your hand (in most cases) onto a stack.
So someone could not stop you from casting a spell by have a Memory Jar on the field and then in response to you casting a spell crack the jar, in hopes of stopping you from originally casting a spell. This is what I was really trying to ask. I got confused because of the suspend mechanic, I forgot Wheel of Fate has no casting cost.
Dallie says... #1
You can't really cast Wheel of Fate , short of something like Epic Experiment or Bloodbraid Elf . If you suspend Wheel of Fate , it'll be exiled with 4 time counters on it.
Memory Jar only exiles the cards from the players' hands, where Wheel of Fate isn't.
