Omniscience in EDH
Asked by SQR0115 12 years ago
I was playing a game earlier today and successfully resolved Omniscience . My opponent then asked if I that would allow me to cast my general, Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind , without paying its mana cost. I know that in EDH you can cast your general at any time you could normally cast a creature spell, but is it played as if it were in your hand, or does it enter play from the command zone bypassing your hand entirely?
Epochalyptik is right, but I'd like to add in that if you do have a card that changes mana costs of everything you cast, you can pay the alternate cost for your general, plus the additional costs of casting him.

Technically, nothing can change the mana cost of a card. A card's mana cost is always the amount of mana in the card's upper right corner.
Instead, effects can either reduce the total casting cost of spells or offer alternate casting costs for spells.

Ah yes, exactly what I meant, just couldn't find the words.

Like if you had a Zombie EDH deck with Grimgrin, Corpse-Born as your general and you successfully resolved a Rooftop Storm then you could cast him for free from the Command Zone. Although, you would still have to pay for any commander tax costs or any other additional costs that may arise.

Unless your commander is actually put into your hand (because it was Unsummon ed, for example), it will likely be in the Command Zone. Since you're casting it from the CZ, Omniscience 's alternate cost doesn't apply, and you must pay the normal casting cost (including additional costs like the commander tax) to cast the creature.
