Mycosynth Lattice and Caged Sun

Asked by Marpy 10 years ago

My friends and are where discussing the interactions between, as the title says, Mycosynth Lattice and Caged Sun. Namely if you have Caged Sun out, and let's say name black with an Urborb, Tomb of Yawgmoth in play, since the Lattice doesn't remove the swamp subtype from lands, would they still produce 2 black?

Please remember to link all cards using double brackets ([ [ and ] ]):
Mycosynth Lattice
Caged Sun
Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth

Colorless isn't a color. Naming black means you don't need Mycosynth Lattice . Did this help or am I misunderstanding your questiion?

Sorry, I forgot how to do that. Heh.Well, if you have all three cards out, would [Caged Sun] (naming black) still let you tap an Urborg for 2 black mana (which you can use as though it were any other color). Not really a combo, just a rules argument I couldn't find an answer to on-line. I'm thinking it would, but not sure if everything being colorless would affect it.

No. The second line says "All...permanents are colorless." The answer would be yes if that said "colorless in addition to their other colors," but it doesn't, so the answer is no.

You also link with two square brackets, not one

But lands are colorless to begin with, and produce colored mana normally. I don't see how that particular wording would stop it.

@Matsi883: You're incorrect.

All lands are still Swamps. Mycosynth Lattice does not remove types from anything. With Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth on the battlefield, all lands will be Swamps in addition to their other colors. Tapping any of your lands for black mana will result in Caged Sun 's triggered mana ability adding an additional black mana to your mana pool.

Yes. Thank you. That is what I wanted to know. So Mycosynth Lattice will not (strictly) disable Caged Sun (like my friends were suggesting).

Mycosynth Lattice has no interaction with Caged Sun 's first or last ability, although it does disable the second ability because all permanents are colorless.

So we have colorless Swamps...like normal. Now I see.

He's asking whether Caged Sun 's last ability works. It does.

I feel that the confusion with your friends comes from Mycosynth Lattice 's second and third abilities. Making a spell colorless does not remove any colored mana requirements from it. As a matter of fact Ghostfire is a colorless spell that cost colored mana without any other interactions. The third ability makes it so that you can spend mana as if it were mana of any color, it doesn't make your mana change to any other type it just changes how you can spend it. Caged Sun naming black and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth make it so that you can add BB to your mana pool any time you tap a land and then Mycosynth Lattice makes it so that you can spend that mana as if it were mana of any color.
