Mind grind against Kozilek

Asked by Holy_Orders 8 years ago

What happens if I cast Mind Grind on an opponent who has no land in his library and graveyard left, but has Kozilek, Butcher of Truth and/or Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre. Does he just keep milling forever?

They reveal all cards in their library, then put all cards revealed to grave. Then SBA's are checked. And then any triggers are put onto stack, including Kozilek, Butcher of Truth's and Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre's shuffle triggers.

Ruling for Mind Grind:

1/24/2013 If an opponent's library contains fewer than X land cards, all cards from that library are revealed and put into his or her graveyard.

When that opponent reveals and puts his library into the graveyard, Ulamog/Kozilek's ability triggers and goes on the stack once Mind Grind is done resolving. Then it resolves and the graveyard is shuffled in to that player's library.

The stack is now empty and no "infinite" milling is taking place.

Also notice that Mind Grind doesn't actually move cards to the graveyard until you're finished with the process of revealing them. Even if Kozilek was replaced by a creature with a replacement effect like Progenitus or Blightsteel Colossus, there would be no "infinite mill".
