Marchesa, the Black Rose + Braids, Arisen Nightmare: Can Braids' sacrifice be brought back via Marchesa's recursion the same turn the sacrifice happens?
Asked by Last_Laugh 1 year ago
End of turn I have Braids, Arisen Nightmare, Marchesa, the Black Rose, and another creature with a +1+1 counter that has no effect on this scenario in play. Can I stack sac'ing the creature with a +1+1 counter to Braids at end of turn and Marchesa's EoT ability to bring creatures who died with a +1+1 counter so that the sacrificed creature comes back almost immediately that same turn? Or would the sac'ed creature have to wait for the next end step before Marchesa brings it back?

Ok, thank you. I thought it was the case that Marchesa's delayed triggers were all already on the stack when Braids' does her sacrifice so the sac'ed creature would have to wait a turn before coming back but I had the owner of my LGS tell me otherwise. Even with the awkward timing it's probably worth a slot still.

Although your question has been answered already, I would say Braids, Arisen Nightmare is worth the slot. I've played her in a couple of decks (Isshin and Zimone and Dina/soon-to-be Lord Windgrace). The flexibility on permanents that she can sacrifice is super useful, and I typically draw at least one card from her each turn she sticks around.

Rhadamanthus I have a follow up question for ya. Will the creatures that Marchesa recurs at eot be back in time to be valid "targets" for Braids' sacrifice? I'm assuming no, but it's worth asking.

For something that died earlier, yes. The sacrifice for Braids happens during the resolution of her trigger. Since Braids' trigger and the delayed triggers created by Marchesa are trying to go onto the stack at the same time and you control them all, you can order them so that the creatures from the delayed triggers come back to the battlefield before you make the choice for Braids' trigger.

No, the timing doesn't work out. The key reason is that Marchesa's last ability doesn't trigger at end of turn to bring back things that died. Rather, it triggers when one of your creatures with a +1/+1 counter dies, and then as the trigger resolves it sets up a separate delayed triggered ability ("...at the beginning of your next end step") that will trigger at the beginning of the next end step to bring the creature back. The creature you sacrificed to Braids' triggered ability will have to wait.
