Mana Reflection Question
Asked by SandyDufresne 14 years ago
So, I have a Heartbeat of Spring and Caged Sun (naming green) in play and my opponent has a Mana Flare in play. At this point, my Forest s tap for four green mana. Now, I choose to cast Mana Reflection . Would I be able to tap for five green mana or do I tap for 8 green because Mana Reflection doubles my production? Thanks for your help.

5/1/2008: If you have Mana Reflection on the battlefield and tap a permanent for mana, but another replacement effect would change the type and/or amount of mana it would produce (such as Contamination, which says "If a land is tapped for mana, it produces B instead of any other type and amount"), you decide what order to apply those effects in. In this example, applying Mana Reflection first and Contamination second would result in B; applying Contamination first and Mana Reflection second would result in BB.
I assume you would want to order the triggers to give you 8 mana.

You would be able to get 6 mana. Since Caged Sun and Heartbeat of Spring don't say that the LAND produces an extra mana, the effect of Mana Reflection will not double any bonuses given by those two permanents.
However, Mana Flare states that the land is the source of the extra mana, so you can apply Flare first, then Reflection for 4 mana, then Heartbeat and Sun will add 2 more for a total of 6.

Edit: please ignore the first response I gave. It posted erroneously before I caught the wordings.

Mana Flare has been reworded to say "Whenever a player taps a land for mana, that player adds one mana to his or her mana pool of any type that land produced." (source: Magiccards.info)
You would end up with 5 mana, because you are only tapping the land for 1 mana, and the rest is being added to your mana pool from an outside source.

Based on the wording, only Mana Flare 's ability would double because it is the only one that says that it produces an additional mana of the same type. Heartbeat of Spring and Caged Sun don't have the word "produce" in their wordings, only "add."
I would love to be wrong on this because I would rather have 8 mana than 5 mana.
