Leyline of Sanctity v Leyline of Punishment
Asked by djdauenbaugh 14 years ago
If a RDW with a Leyline of Punishment in its opening hand is playing a mono-W deck with Leyline of Sanctity in its opening hand, what happens? Do they cancel each other, does one trump the other? I'd like to understand the rulings, so if someone could explain the technical, I'd appreciate it. Thanks all.

Just in case anyone else who needs to know reads this (since I've actually heard it mentioned a couple other times lately) -
The answer is that they don't cancel each other or trump one over the other. They don't interact at all, actually. Punishment states that damage can't be prevented and players can't gain life; sanctity simply says you can't be opponent-targeted.
So the Punishment player can do unpreventable damage with spells like Slagstorm that don't target, but he can't hit the Sanctity player with spells like Lightning Bolt or Duress .

103.5. Once all players have kept their opening hands, if any cards in the starting players hand allow that player to begin the game with those cards on the battlefield, he or she may put any or all of them onto the battlefield. Then each other player in turn order may do the same.
If it DID target, for the sake of argument, then it would depend on who goes first. If the RDW player went first, then his/her leyline would be able to target his/her opponent, since his/her leyline isn't in play yet. If the white player went first, then the opposite would be true.

Oh never mind, I just reread them. I'm retarted.
