Lavinia of the Tenth detaining permanents
Asked by TheWrenster 11 years ago
Hi all.
Lavinia of the Tenth
upon entering the battlefield detains all "permanents" with cmc 4 or less - what effect does this have, say, if an opponent has cast a Detention Sphere
on one of my creatures?
Im curious as to why the wording is "permanent" and not "creature", as Detain seemingly is aimed at creatures....So what can this detaining of permanents actually do?! What am i missing?
ThanksW

Lands have CMC 0, but it doesn't matter. Lavinia of the Tenth specifically states "nonland permanents."
Permanents are artifacts, enchantments, planeswalkers, creatures, and lands. Lavinia of the Tenth shuts down creatures, but it also stops keyrunes, Liliana of the Veil and other planeswalkers, and any enchantments with activated abilities (e.g. Mobilization ).

Lavinia of the Tenth should have no effect on a Detention Sphere in play because the Detention Sphere doesn't have any activated abilities.
as for nonland noncreature permanents that Lavinia of the Tenth will affect with her detainment, a card like Agoraphobia is an example of a card with an activated ability that can't be used as long as it's detained. (the 2U return it to it's owner's hand ability).

EDIT: im guessing it would just be activated abilities of eg. artifacts. But what cmc do Lands have....?
