Lands have color identity for EDH?

Asked by CamperCarl00 11 years ago

For the rules of commander (barring any potential house rules) is it possible to put in lands such as a Mountain into a mono-white EDH Commander deck? I know that it would tap for colorless mana, but is it specifically restricted from being in the deck in the first place?

Lands do have color identities based on the mana symbols in their text boxes. Basic lands all have color identities that are the same as the color of mana they produce. Therefore, you can't include off-type basics in EDH decks.

It's not legal.

Mountain (and other basic lands) technically have the text "(Tap): Add (R) to your mana pool". Check out some older printings in Gatherer.

Since it has a red mana symbol on it, it won't match your mono-white commander's color identity.

On an interesting side-note, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth has no color identity and can go in every EDH. Like an Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite or Linvala, Keeper of Silence one, with Kormus Bell .
