Jarad and Retribution of the Ancients?

Asked by Atony1400 8 years ago

For this example;

If I have 5 cards in the graveyard, and I have Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord (7/7) and Retribution of the Ancients on the battlefield, and I activate Retribution's ability to remove 4 +1/+1's from Jarad, would he still have the counters, because his text says "Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord gets +1/+1 for each creature in your graveyard."

Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord's ability does not confer counters. An effect only uses or cares about counters if it uses the word counters. Jarad's ability just gives Jarad a static buff. This buff does not interact with effects that care about counters, which means you can't use it to pay for Retribution of the Ancients's ability.

So, I need to use a different creature to trigger that ability?

Is the same true if I use the equipment Bonehoarder, attached to something like an Elvish Mystic (6/6) with 5 creatures in all graveyards, and try to use Retribution of the Ancients ability to remove 4?

Retribution of the Ancients does not have a triggered ability. It has an activated ability. Activated abilities are manually activated. Triggered abilities trigger automatically when their conditions are met.

Bonehoard does not confer counters. Again, an effect only gives or concerns counters if it uses the word counter(s). If it doesn't say that word, you're out of luck. You can't use a static buff for abilities like Retribution of the Ancients's.

Examples for visual aid:

Giant Growth gives a temporary static buff.

Reap What Is Sown puts counters on the creatures.
