Is there a way to overrule activated ability speed? (i.e only as a sorcery)

Asked by CloudKillerJay 9 months ago

Is there a way to overrule "cast only as a sorcery" on an activated ability? May seem silly, but I can't find any cards that will allow me to do that. It's hard to know what to put in to narrow down on other sites (don't know if I can use their names, but I'm sure you know which ones I mean). There are a few cards I would like to sneak in at instant speed like Dodgy Jalopy, obviously a great one to trigger after blockers have been declared. Any help would be great, many thanks.

The usual templating for this would be something that gives you the ability to do effects at instant speed. Cards like The Wandering Emperor or Forge Anew explicitly state that you can take some game action at instant speed, while others like Necromancy or Lightning Reflexes again use the word instant as the word for changing their timing, but an oracle search for "abilit" and "instant" reveals nothing that allows you to change the timing of abilities. "abilit" and "flash" gives nothing relevant either.

pssst. Down here. Yeah you. You could just cheat. Activate the ability during combat. It's their fault if they don't know what your card with tiny text in a hard to see place does. Who reads the cards anyways...

There is currently no way to break the "sorcery speed" restriction on activated abilities. I also find it unlikely that they ever will create a way to do so since the sorcery speed restriction is an exception to the rules and exceptions to exceptions would get messy in templating.

Delphen was obviously joking, but... don't cheat.

To be specific: "[Activate this] only as a sorcery" is a shortened way for rules text to say "[Activate this] only during a main phase on your turn when the stack is empty". There isn't anything you can do in the game to change the meaning of this special phrase for rules templating.

Let's not joke about cheating. We don't want people to get the wrong idea about what this part of the website is about.

Sorry y'all, I thought it funny at the time, but I agree now it was in poor taste. Don't cheat

Sorry Rhadamanthus I've not been well and strung out for a while. I'll try and keep on top of it next time.

No need to apologize, just explaining what I'm doing and giving tips in case you're unfamiliar with the process.
