Interaction between Esix, Fractal Bloom and mana based token creating cards.

Asked by Shimatzu 2 years ago

So lets say i have have Esix, Fractal Bloom and Ant Queen in play. If i activate Ant Queen´s ability 3 times at once, do i get the trigger from Esix only for the first one or for all 3?

Shimatzu You would still only get it for the first activation. For activated abilities like that one on Ant Queen , even in you activate it multiple times each activation is treated as separate instances on the stack in response to one another. So, the first activation would resolve and you could use Esix's ability with it since that would be the first time. Then the other activations would trigger as normal.

You can link to cards like Guerric did so illustratively above by doing something like this:

[[Ant Queen]]

That becomes Ant Queen , and thus we can all be on the same page about what the cards in question do. Thanks!

Shimatzu One of the challenging things about commander is that so many degenerate things and infinite combos are possible that it is disappointing when it seems like another effect more balanced than those doesn't work. Even if it did work that way getting a few more tokens wouldn't really be that broken. Some of this is just the progression of the game over time, they are much more careful and intentional in their card wording these days! That being said, I am sure a commander like Esix, Fractal Bloom will give you plenty of other degenerate things to do. Don't forget that you can definitely copy him with Spark Double , Sakashima the Impostor , or Helm of the Host and get the some of the degenerate interactions you are seeking!

Of note, extra copies of Esix, Fractal Bloom do not create extra tokens or apply to extra instances of tokens being created. I am at a loss for figuring out anything useful that it would do, actually.

Gidgetimer That's a valid point! Since it doesn't make the tokens itself and multiple instances would only apply to "the first time," all it would allow you to do is make that first instance two different things, but once it all resolved it would only end up being a copy of the last target to resolve. So, as you said, you could copy Esix, but it really wouldn't do anything useful. Thanks for pointing that out!
