Incinerate question
Asked by Gambit 14 years ago
If I had a 2/2 creature on the board, then my opponent uses Incinerate can I respond Mutagenic Growth and save my creature?
Yes you can, as your opponent casts Incinerate you may cast Mutagenic Growth in response by paying 2 life or 1 green, the mutagenic growth will go on the stack above the incinerate and then they will resolve in order from top to bottom. So your creature will get +2/+2 making it a 4/4 and then incinerate will do 3 damage.
As long as no other damage is dealt to it for the rest of the turn it will survive as the +2/+2 bonus and the damage wear off at the same time (end of turn)

Although it is important to note that the damage does not actually change a creatures toughness, it is simply a mark on them that lasts till the end of turn, thats why a Shock wont kill a Darksteel Myr but a Disfigure will.

Yes you may! I believe that when your opponent activates Incinerate , you gain priority and have the option of playing something in response, so long as it is the same speed, eg an instant in response to an instant. After, your opponent would have the opportunity to play something in response to YOUR card, and if they don't then the stack will resolve. The stack always resolves in reverse order so the most recently played cards, in this case your Mutagenic Growth , will resolve first. Your creature will become a 4/4, and then his Incinerate will deal 3 damage, leaving you with 1 point of toughness until the damage clears.
