If my opponent copied my Legendary creature, do they both die?

Asked by Gambit 13 years ago

Or just my Legendary creature?

Yes, all copies are put into their owner's graveyards at the same time.

704.5k If two or more legendary permanents with the same name are on the battlefield, all are put into their owners graveyards. This is called the legend rule. If only one of those permanents is legendary, this rule doesnt apply.

Is it possible to have two permanents with the same name on the field at the same time, with only one of them being legendary? If so, wouldn't the legendary one die because of its own legend rule?

Technically a different question than the one being asked, but just trying to clarify 704.5k.

@landgrafb Take a look at the last sentence of the rule 704.5k

"If only one of those permanents is legendary, this rules DOESN'T apply."

There is only one way I can think of with current cards printed to get two creatures named the same with only one being legendary. It is in the Un-Format with _ (his name breaks the formatting, so I had to manually link him). Naming him after another creature on the field that is legendary won't kill either of them per that last line of 704.5k.

Also, just in case the questioner is curious about ways to accomplish effects of this kind, Sakashima the ImpostorMTG Card: Sakashima the Impostor does something similar, though he does so by having a different name but copying everything else about the card.

Yeah, my question was in reference to that last line. Didn't know if that line cancelled out the legend rule entirely for that scenario, or just the part where they BOTH die.

Doesn't really matter though, since Wizards isn't likely to print any cards that allow that effect to happen.

I think you are thinking too hard about it. Reread the last line again. "If only one of those permanents is legendary, this rule doesn't apply." Meaning the 'legend rule' doesn't apply, nothing dies, nothing happens. It's as if nothing was legendary.

Maybe I should phrase it this way: the legend rule only comes into effect if two or more legendary permanents share names.

Well technically the two permanents have to have the same name for the legend rule to kick in so maybe CloneMTG Card: Clone wouldn't kill the other legend. idk. I know that's why all legendary tokens have to have names.

Nope, CloneMTG Card: Clone will kill (and be killed) by the legend rule. When you copy a permanent or spell, name is one of the characteristics that are copied (along with Mana Cost, Type, Abilities, etc...) unless otherwise stated like with Sakashima the ImpostorMTG Card: Sakashima the Impostor.

Right now in Standard for example, one of the more reliable ways of killing Hexproof Legends (Thrun, the Last Troll MTG Card: Thrun, the Last Troll , Geist of Saint TraftMTG Card: Geist of Saint Traft) is via use of a clone-type effect (Phantasmal ImageMTG Card: Phantasmal Image) because, like CloneMTG Card: Clone, it does not directly target them. This allows it to bypass hexproof.
