If a creature is sacrificed, did it die?

Asked by Unsuriati 11 years ago

Say I enchant an Abhorrent Overlord with Gift of Immortality , and sacrifice him at the beginning of my upkeep. Does he return? Or if I have a Bloodthrone Vampire and sacrifice all my other creatures, can I Golgari Charm to regenerate them all? That's probably a different situation, depending on the regenerate mechanic.

Your Abhorrent Overlord will return, but your creatures you sacrificed with Bloodthrone Vampire will not.

"Die" is a short-hand term for a creature being moved from the Battlefield to the Graveyard. It doesn't matter why it went to the graveyard (combat damage, Doom Blade , sacrificed, etc) it's still considered "dying".

Regenerate is a different matter. Regenerate prevents the next time a creature would be destroyed and instead removes all damage on it, taps it, and removes it from combat. "Destroyed" in Magic is considered either lethal damage (more damage marked on a creature than its toughness) or a destroy-effect like Doom Blade . Regenerate can't save a creature from being sacrificed. Note that the regenerated creature never actually leaves the battlefield.

AAhhh.. I see, I see. Thank you, GreatSword. If I may ask, does sacrificing also put counters onto Jar of Eyeballs ?

Sacrificing counts as dying, but it isn't destroyed. This means that neither regenerate nor indestructibility gets around sacrificing, but you would still get your Gift of Immortality trigger.

You'd get your Jar of Eyeballs trigger.

Sadly, I knew that it gets around Indestructibility, but I didn't make that connection. :/ I'm stupid sometimes.

It's no problem, we all have to learn everything at some point ;)
