Humble Defector + Skullclamp

Asked by SteelNinja 9 years ago

If I activate Skullclamp's equip ability targeting Humble Defector and activate the Defector's tap ability in response, will the clamp still attach to the defector afterwards?

No. Equip targets a creature you don't control. If control of the creature changes, the equip ability will have an illegal target.

However, if you had something like Leonin Shikari or Auriok Windwalker, you could activate the ability of Humble Defector, and then while the ability was still on the stack, equip the Skullclamp to do what you're wanting to do.

I think you can do it the other way around. You activate Humble Defector, putting his ability on stack. You keep priority and equip Skullclamp on Humble Defector. You pass priority. Skullclamp resolves and kills Humble Defector, but his ability is still on stack so it resolves as well.

Equip abilities can only be activated whenever you could cast a sorcery. They can't be used in response to anything.
