How does Tergrid, God of Fright  Flip interact with Leyline of the Void? More specifically are the triggers stackable and can I order it so that nonpermanent cards are exiled?

Asked by MLS91 3 years ago

I'm just curious to know if the triggers are stackable in a manner that allows me to steal permanents before they are exiled? The wording seems to say no, but the interpretation seems to have some wiggle room

Unfortunately it doesn't work like that.

Tegrid's ability is a trigger. So 'whenever' something happens, you get a trigger to also do another thing. Markers for triggered abilities are 'when' or 'whenever'.

Leyline has a replacement effect, which can be identified by the marker 'if'/'instead'. Replacement effects don't trigger. What they do is they completely replace an effect or event in question - it doesn't happen in the first place.

So in your example everything your opponent discards or sacs, would never see the graveyard and Tegrid's ability will just never return anything, despite triggering.

To further clarify sergiodelrio's answer, Tergrid says "you may put that card from a graveayrd onto the battlefield". Since it's not in the graveyard you can't return it.
