How does countering triggered or activated abilities work?

Asked by Halphinianian 8 years ago

I have seen some cards like Voidslime and Stifle that counter activated and triggered abilities. Now I do know what both of those are, but what I don't know is what happens after.

My question is can a player still activate an activate an activated ability or trigger a triggered ability the turn after it is countered? Or are cards like Voidslime just there to stall your opponents for a turn?

Countering the ability happens once. It can be activated again as soon as they can pay for it again or will trigger again as soon as the trigger condition is met again.

Most of the time countering abilities is a tempo play. There are certain times that countering an ability is more than that. Countering a fetch or a storm trigger are the most useful plays with ability counters.

Interdict is the only example I know of that counters an activated ability and "keeps it from being activated again" until the end of the turn.
