how do counter spells in the graveyard interact with Harness the Storm?

Asked by RedPillRageMage 2 years ago

I'm playing a Red/Blue deck say I have harness the storm on the field, and at least 1 copy of remand in the graveyard then on my opponents turn I cast remand from my hand. Can I then pay the mana cost to cast remand again from the graveyard and counter 2 of my opponents spells sequentially or do both copies resolve at the same time there by nullifying a double counter against my enemies spells?

What Kazuhahaha means by "effects never 'resolve at the same time'". is that the stack works as the name suggests: things are stacked on top, never next to, one another.

If an effect would seemingly try to put things onto the stack simultaneously, the player who controls the effect chooses how they are put on the stack. If both your effect and an opponents try to happen at the same time, the non-active player's (whoever's turn it isn't) effect happens first.

If there are at least two spells on the stack, you could absolutely counter (or try to counter) them both.

With Remand you could even engage in shenanigans if your opponent only had one spell on the stack.

eg. Player 2 casts Lightning Bolt , you cast Remand , targeting the Bolt, in response.

Harness the Storm triggers, and you cast Remand from the graveyard, targeting your own Remand on the stack.

The g/y Remand resolves, returns the first Remand to your hand, and you draw a card. You can then (if you have the mana) recast Remand from your hand, once again targeting Lightning Bolt (which would then let you cast Remand from your g/y again).

It's an expensive way to draw cards, but it would be funny.

Named_Tawyny The spell cost is actually quite fine with me in that situation as I have a creature Baral, Chief of Compliance and a planeswalker Rowan, Scholar of Sparks  Flip that both cut the cost of my instants and sorceries. In fact, Baral has a particularly strong synergy with remand.
