Harsh Mentor question

Asked by Snivy__ 6 years ago

Hey guys I have a serious question that I'm debating with my brother about:

When the opponent remove a counter from a planeswalker to crew Heart of Kiran, do they still take damage when you have a Harsh Mentor out?

My brother says it's a passive ability, but I think that since it's an alternative crew cost he would take damage.

Let me know what you guys think!

Firstly, there is a rules Q&A section for these types of questions. The link is in the top bar.

Secondly, Heart of Kiran has basically 2 crew costs - remove a loyalty from a walker or tap creatres with 3 or more power. Regardless of which one you are paying, you are still activating an ability of an artifact, so Harsh Mentor will trigger.

To elaborate a little on how this works, you activate the crew ability and pay an alternate cost to do so. The ability that allows you to do so is in fact a static ability. But much as you are still casting Force of Will when you exile a blue card and pay a life as per its static ability, you are still activating Crew.

To add a bit to this, from the rules.

702.121a Crew is an activated ability of Vehicle cards. “Crew N” means “Tap any number of untapped creatures you control with total power N or greater: This permanent becomes an artifact creature until end of turn.”
