Guttersnipe and the stack
Asked by wonder_llama 10 years ago
my opponent has a Guttersnipe
on the field and casts a Lightning Strike
. in response, I cast a Doom Blade
at the Guttersnipe
. does the damage from Guttersnipe
come through even though he will have died before the Lightning Strike
resolved?
Yes. First off, the Lightning Strike doesn't have to resolve for Guttersnipe to trigger, only cast. Second, an ability exists independent of its source, so once the Guttersnipe trigger is on the stack it will still happen regardless if it is still alive (barring a Stifle or similar card).

Once an ability is activated or triggered, it goes on the stack and will resolve, independent of it's source. Guttersnipe doesn't need to still be on the battlefield for his ability to resolve once it has already been triggered.

Once an ability is put onto the stack, removing the source won't change that fact. The triggered ability from Guttersnipe will still resolve.
